How India's UTM framework is managing low-altitude drone traffic
India’s Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) framework is a digital system developed under the Ministry of Civil Aviation to manage drone traffic safely. It mainly covers low-altitude airspace up to 1,000 feet. The framework supports real-time drone tracking, automated flight approvals, and collision avoidance systems. It helps manage the growing use of drones in logistics, surveillance, mapping, agriculture, and other commercial operations across India.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) classifies drones in India into five weight categories under the Drone Rules, 2021: Nano, Micro, Small, Medium, and Large. Each category is based on the drone's maximum all-up weight (MAUW) and determines the applicable requirements for registration, type certification, remote pilot certification, operational permissions, and other regulatory compliance before a drone can be legally operated in India.

Drone flight in India is governed by three statutes: Drone Rules 2021 (operations, registration, insurance), Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam 2024 (parent aviation law and penalties), and the pending Civil Drone Bill 2025. Operators register on eGCA for a ₹100 UIN, hold a Remote Pilot Certificate for commercial flight, and receive per-flight permission via DigitalSky under NPNT.
